The client needed a Minecraft setting built for the recording an animated prologue of their upcoming sci-fi novel. The animation would follow a cinematic style, featuring the setting of the opening scene of the book .
“The setting is a Japanese-inspired Monastery in a
dystopian, snow-covered world, featuring rich
architectural details that blend traditional Japanese and
futuristic aesthetics. The environment should evoke
themes of mystery, prophecy, and ancient wisdom.
The design should focus on creating immersive visuals
that can be animated in Blender, emphasizing dramatic
lighting, textures, and atmosphere.”
Specifications
Along with the first chapter of the book, which described the mood and character interaction and motion through the space, the following specifications about the rooms were defined:
Monastery room interior and annex balcony
Design concept
To better capture the scene and the details required, three main areas were designed:
– The hall of the monastery where the military and sci-fi equipment is set,
– The great master’s tea room, which provides a contrasting, cozy vibe, full of tapestries and relics. The room is part of the balcony platform, but is enclosed with shoji doors, allowing for the glow sunset light to filter into the interior difusely.
– The balcony itself, overlooking the snowy landscape.

The client requested for an escape room to be designed for a friend’s birthday private event. Their request included incorporating elements of their shared memories, and Lilo & Stitch theme.
In terms of design, they looked for low-difficulty puzzles, with an average of 3 min duration per room. In proportion to the client’s budget, 4 rooms were designed.
Room 1
The first room of the escape room experience is set in a plane, in reference to one of the client’s shared memories. For narrative purposes, the plane is about to crash.
Puzzle: the player is tasked to rumage through the chests and find a certain amount of a certain item required to open the emergency doors.
The challenge ends with the player having to drop off the plane onto the next room, a shopping mall. The exterior was tailored so that the player, whilst flying, can deduce which environment they are landing on.

Room 2
The second room is an abandoned shopping mall, overriden by vegetation and humidity. The structure is composed of a central fountain square and four stores, one in each corner. The theme is again based on the client’s shared memories.
Puzzle: the player must find six banners, each with one letter. Using the wooden billboard, they can reorganise the letters and find the secret word, which is then renamed into an item that unlocks the next door.

Room 3
The third and last puzzle is themed around birthday celebration, again tied to the client’s shared memories. The room is simple but perhaps the most challenging out of the three, denoting an progressive difficulty within the game.
Puzzle: The player must lit the three birthday candles to open the door. To do so, they’ll have to find three flints within the room, since each of them only has one durability point. The last flint is particulary invisitble to the eye, hidden in a subroom behind a painting.

Room 4
The last room is the finale, and mimics Lilo & Stitch’s house.
