The Great Master’s temple

The client needed a Minecraft setting built for the recording an animated prologue of their upcoming sci-fi novel. The animation would follow a cinematic style, featuring the setting of the opening scene of the book .

“The setting is a Japanese-inspired Monastery in a
dystopian, snow-covered world, featuring rich
architectural details that blend traditional Japanese and
futuristic aesthetics. The environment should evoke
themes of mystery, prophecy, and ancient wisdom.
The design should focus on creating immersive visuals
that can be animated in Blender, emphasizing dramatic
lighting, textures, and atmosphere.”

Specifications

Along with the first chapter of the book, which described the mood and character interaction and motion through the space, the following specifications about the rooms were defined:

Monastery room interior and annex balcony

  • – A large, traditional style room with futuristic elements like glowing accents, metallic textures, and subtle sci-fi technology.
  • – A chandelier made of green jade crystals hanging from the ceiling.
  • – Decorative Tapestries with ancient patterns and symbols.
  • – A central wooden table holding nothing but a small, ancient bonsai tree in a shallow pot.
  • – Small props to reflect the military samurai aesthetic, like armor stands, staff racks, or scrolls.
  • – Snow effects scattered near the entrance to emphasize the cold, outdoor environment.
  • – Warm, golden lighting to match a sunset filtering through large open balcony doors.

Design concept

To better capture the scene and the details required, three main areas were designed:

The hall of the monastery where the military and sci-fi equipment is set,

The great master’s tea room, which provides a contrasting, cozy vibe, full of tapestries and relics. The room is part of the balcony platform, but is enclosed with shoji doors, allowing for the glow sunset light to filter into the interior difusely.

The balcony itself, overlooking the snowy landscape.
